Horses

In 2021, we decided to start our homesteading adventure with horses. Looking back, I can't believe that's what we started with. I grew up with cows, and Julie grew up with some horse experience, nowhere near the experience we needed.

We started by leasing two horses from a nearby farm. We kept them for a short time. Due to one being a skittish thoroughbred ex-racehorse, it proved to be too much for us to handle right out of the gate.

We continued to search for some horses that were a little more our speed. In May of 2021, we found two horses from a rescue in southwestern(ish) Wisconsin while searching online. Both of which were estimated to be around 20 years old, one a Morgan and the other a Quarter.

Never having hauled horses before, we borrowed a truck and trailer and set out on a 5-6-hour trip; the rest is history.

We still have those two horses. After hearing horror stories from co-workers and friends, we realized how lucky we were. We've had no major health issues, and god willing, we'd like to keep it that way.
